Promoting Inclusive Events: Fostering Diversity and Creating Safe Spaces

At Worldspan, we are always looking inwards at ourselves and how we can encourage more diversity and be more inclusive in the workplace. It is essential, not only in the workplace, but also in the events we organise and attend.

Events provide unique opportunities for networking, learning, and collaboration. They serve as platforms for sharing knowledge, fostering innovation, and building meaningful connections. However, for these experiences to be truly enriching and impactful, they must embrace diversity in all its forms, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, and abilities.

By promoting diversity in events, we create environments that reflect the real world, where individuals from different backgrounds come together to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and spark innovation. It allows us to tap into a wide range of experiences, insights, and talents, which leads to more robust and inclusive outcomes.

So, how can we improve diversity in events? Here are a few of our thoughts:

1️. Representation: Strive for diverse representation among speakers, panellists, and facilitators. Ensure that people from different backgrounds and identities are given a platform to share their expertise and contribute to the conversation.

2️. Outreach and Marketing: Implement inclusive marketing strategies that reach diverse communities and make them feel welcomed and included. Consider partnerships with diverse organisations and influencers who can help amplify your event's message to broader audiences.

3️. Accessibility: Make events accessible to individuals with disabilities by providing appropriate accommodations, such as wheelchair accessibility, sign language interpreters, or closed captioning. Also, consider the accessibility of the event venue itself, including ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms.

4️. Safe Spaces: Create an environment where everyone feels safe, respected, and able to express themselves authentically. Develop a code of conduct that explicitly prohibits discrimination, harassment, and hate speech, and ensure that it is effectively enforced throughout the event.

5️. Networking Opportunities: Facilitate intentional networking opportunities that encourage attendees to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Consider icebreaker activities, affinity groups, or networking sessions specifically designed to promote inclusivity and foster meaningful connections.

By actively working to improve diversity in events, we can create inclusive spaces that celebrate the richness of human experiences and contribute to a more equitable society. Let's strive to make events not just opportunities for professional growth but also platforms for social progress.
